Monterrey is a city noted for its historical progress, particularly from the end of the 19th century onwards, when it spearheaded the country’s industrial development. The city´s tradition is expressed in its unusual contrasts of colonial architecture with contemporary buildings. Places like the Macroplaza and its surroundings are some of the most visited parts of the city, showcasing stunning civil and religious buildings such as the Cathedral, the Chapel of Sweet Names, the Casino, the City Theater, the Central Library, the State Congress, the City Hall and various interesting museums. Monterrey’s industrial nature, together with the fact that it is a border state, has made it a wonderful shopping and business center. Its modern malls and luxurious hotels equipped with conference halls serve as one of the largest business and convention centers in Latin America. Cooking is also an important part of the local culture, based primarily on meat dishes. Classic examples include delicious roast or braised kid (goat), charcoal-grilled ribs, shredded dried beef mixed with scrambled egg and traditional sauces such as pico de gallo, la bandera and la fresadilla. A vibrant nightlife is also characteristic of Monterrey. Some of the most popular places for dancing, listening to music and enjoying a drink include Club Vongole, Charao’s, El Skandal, Kumbala and Far West Rodeo. Monterrey is a perfect blend of 400 years of history combined with contemporary structures and modern living. It is a vivid example of one of Mexico’s greatest industrial and historic cities.
